At Moncton Community Residences Inc. (MCRI), AFLA connects individuals with complex or high needs to trained caregivers in a family home. The goal is simple and meaningful: a safe, stable place where daily life feels personal, routines are predictable, and relationships are consistent. "After a while, it doesn’t feel like a program - it feels like family."

Alternative Family Living Arrangement (AFLA): Family-Based Living With Professional Support

How It Works

We start with a person-centred intake involving family and/or guardians to understand needs, strengths, interests, and goals. From there, MCRI carefully screens provider households, completes home safety reviews and background checks, and arranges meet-and-greets so everyone can get to know each other. If the fit is right, we create an Individual Relationship Agreement that outlines routines, goals, and support strategies. MCRI stays involved through regular check-ins, quality-assurance visits, documentation support, and 24/7 on-call assistance.

Over time, many matches become long-term. As the months pass, everyday moments - dinner at the table, movie nights, birthdays - create a real sense of home.

Who It Serves

  • Individuals who need near-continuous (often 24/7) support and benefit emotionally, mentally, and socially from a stable, nurturing family setting.
  • People seeking a more personal, natural living environment while retaining autonomy and dignity - with professional safeguards and oversight.

Your Role as a Participant (and Family)

You bring your preferences, routines, and goals. Together with the provider household and MCRI staff, you help shape a day-to-day life that feels natural - meals, appointments, hobbies, and community outings. Families and guardians remain valued partners, staying connected in ways that work for everyone.
